A summary of the key points of legislation

The purpose of the Betting (Amendment) Bill is to amend the Betting Act 1931 with the object of bringing online/phone  sports gambling  within the existing regulatory framework.

 

Who does it affect?

It will affect bookmakers with online sports betting facilities and punters, in respect of sports betting.  As it stands online betting remains untaxed.  The aim is to bring online sports betting in Ireland within the tax take.

 

When is it due to be enacted?

The Government published its programme of legislation on 5 April 2011. This bill is included on a list of urgent bills which are due to be published by the end of summer 2011.
